Guilty feeling and fear. Two shadows that follow a person since childhood. They can be drivers of progress, but they can also be a paralyzing poison. Fear of punishment gives rise to guilt, and guilt feeds fear. This tangle wraps around the soul, hinders breathing, and makes people commit illogical actions. But can this vicious circle be broken? And do we need to get rid of guilt completely? We explore the intricacies of the two most powerful emotions.

Where does the feeling of guilt come from

Guilt is an emotion that arises when a person violates internal moral codes or social norms. We feel guilty if we lied, betrayed, or didn't help. Physiologically, it is related to the activity of the prefrontal cortex (responsible for self-control) and the amygdala (processing fear). Small children begin to experience guilt at 2-3 years old, when empathy is formed. If parents punish too harshly for mistakes, a child may grow up with an exaggerated sense of guilt ("guilty for everything"). If they are not punished at all, guilt may not develop, and a sociopath may grow up.

Guilt as a tool for manipulation

"You don't love me," "I did so much for you," "If it weren't for you, everything would have worked out" - these are classic phrases of manipulators. They evoke a sense of guilt in the victim to control their behavior. The victim starts to apologize, take on other people's responsibility, and feel like a debtor. This is a destructive scenario. It is important to distinguish between healthy guilt (I really made a mistake) and imposed guilt (they make me feel guilty for who I am).

Fear: biological and social

Fear is a basic emotion that ensures survival. It can be innate (darkness, height, loud noises) and acquired (fear of responsibility, fear of rejection, fear of success). If guilt is an assessment of past actions, then fear is a reaction to future threats. However, guilt and fear are closely intertwined: being afraid of punishment (external or internal), we may commit strange things: lie to hide a mistake, and thus exacerbate guilt.

How guilt and fear destroy health

Chronic guilt and constant fear lead to psychosomatic disorders. Headaches, insomnia, stomach ulcers, hypertension, dermatitis. Cortisol, the stress hormone, is released, which over time destroys the immune system. A person living in guilt hides like a snail in a shell, stops enjoying life, loses the meaning of life. And fear paralyzes initiative, hinders decision-making. It turns out to be a vicious circle: I am afraid to do - I don't do - I blame myself - I am afraid even more.

Guilt that should not be

People often blame themselves for what they cannot control: a loved one's illness ("I didn't protect"), death ("I didn't say goodbye in time"), someone else's choice ("why did he leave, I am a bad person"). This is irrational guilt. It doesn't help correct the mistake, it only tortures. You need to get rid of this kind of guilt. Technique: imagine your friend is in the same situation. Would you blame him? No. So why do you blame yourself?

How to work with the feeling of guilt

The first step is to admit guilt. You can't suppress it, it will break through. The second step is to assess whether the guilt is real. If so, apologize, fix what you can. If not, work with a psychologist. The third step is to learn a lesson: "I won't do that again." The fourth step is to forgive yourself. Yes, you have the right to make mistakes. You are not God. Guilt should not last forever. It's like a signal - heard, taken measures, move on.

How to work with fear

Fear does not disappear with a snap of the fingers. But it can be "tamed". The technique of "desensitization": gradual habituation to the frightening stimulus. For example, if you are afraid of public speaking - start with a toast at dinner. Breathing exercises: deep breaths and slow exhalations reduce the activity of the amygdala. Rationalization: writing on paper "what's the worst that could happen?" (usually not deadly). And most importantly: action. Fear recedes when you start doing what you are afraid of.

Guilt and fear in relationships

A couple where one partner constantly experiences guilt and the other - fear - is doomed. The one who is guilty will grovel, endure, lie. The one who is afraid - control, check, reproach. Healthy relationships are built on respect, not on a sense of duty. If you feel overwhelmed by guilt, or your partner is afraid of you, it is a reason to go to a family psychologist.

Guilt and fear in child education

"If you don't eat porridge, Mom will be upset" - forming guilt. "If you don't study, you will become a cleaner" - forming fear. These are bad pedagogical techniques. A child grows up anxious, insecure. It is better to explain the consequences without frightening: "Porridge is good for energy." And do not attribute guilt: "You broke the cup, let's clean it up together, be more careful next time."

Sense of guilt and fear are not enemies, but indicators. They show where our weak points are, where the boundaries are violated, where we need to change. But if they become chronic - this is already a disease. And it needs to be treated by a specialist. Remember: you have the right to make mistakes. And you have the right not to be afraid of the future. Life is too short to waste it on self-torment and anxiety. Take a deep breath, exhale. And keep living.
