Central role plays the mesolimbic pathway, where dopamine is produced in the ventral area of the striatum and enters the nucleus accumbens. Activation of this chain causes a subjective feeling of pleasure and anticipation. Research on rats using microelectrodes has shown that the neurons in this area "light up" not only when receiving a reward (food, water) but also when a signal预示ing it is presented.

Нейропластичность: Положительный опыт literally changes the brain.

Игровое поведение: Most vivid indicator. Игра is a complex, energy-intensive and risky activity (can be injured, become prey), not providing immediate benefits. Its existence in mammals and birds is evolutionarily justified by the development of skills and strengthening of social ties through positive emotions. Щенки, резвящиеся с сородичами, дельфины, играющие с пузырьками воздуха, or вороны, катающиеся по снежным склонам, obviously get internal pleasure from this.

Many species demonstrate stereotypical movements when positively excited. «Pronking или stotting» у антилоп и газелей — high, bouncing jumps on straight legs. Although initially this could have been a signal to the predator about good physical condition, in a safe environment the young perform them obviously "for themselves". Собаки, greeting their owner, perform characteristic fast, chaotic movements, wagging their tails with a wide amplitude (unlike a low, nervous wagging).

Positive emotions often have an acoustic expression. The mentioned ultrasonic "laughter" of rats (50 kHz) during tickling and play. Мурлыканье у домашних кошек, возникающее не только при ласке, but and in a comfortable, relaxed environment.

Расслабленная поза и «счастливое» выражение «лица»: У приматов, including макак, relaxed «smile» with an open mouth without a grin (play face) — a clear signal of a playful mood. У коров, receiving grooming or located on a quality pasture, one can observe relaxation of the ears and half-closed eyes.

Социальная сплоченность: Joint activities that bring joy (games, grooming, joint meals) strengthen social ties within the herd, increasing its resilience. Research on rodents shows that socialization and playful interactions directly affect the development of the prefrontal cortex, responsible for complex social behavior.

Positive affect and related neurochemical processes (release of oxytocin, endorphins) help neutralize the consequences of chronic stress, improving immune function and overall body resilience.

The presence of an animal's ability to express behavior associated with joy (play, explore, communicate) is a key criterion for assessing the quality of its life in captivity (farms, zoos, home conditions).

Recognition of the ability of animals to experience joy has far-reaching consequences:

The concept of "Five Freedoms" (Welfare Quality) now includes not only the freedom from hunger and suffering, but also the "freedom to express natural behavior", which implies creating conditions for positive experiences.

Modern training methods (positive reinforcement) are based on creating a joyful expectation and positive emotions from cooperation with a person, which is much more effective than methods based on fear.

Understanding that animals strive not just to survive but to have "quality of life" changes approaches to reintroduction and enrichment of the environment in reserves.

Collected scientific data leave no doubt: joy is a real, measurable and vital phenomenon in the lives of many animals. It goes back to ancient neurobiological systems and serves as a powerful evolutionary engine directing behavior towards sociality, exploration and learning. Recognition of this fact requires humanity not just a humane, but also empathetic attitude towards other species. This implies the obligation to create for animals under our care not just conditions for existence, but also opportunities for the expression of their natural behavior and the experience of positive emotional states. The joy of an animal is not an anthropomorphic projection, but a biological reality, the ignoring of which leads to a distorted understanding of their nature and our ethical obligations to them.
